National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority reviews

The National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority (NOPSEMA) regulates oil, gas and greenhouse gas activities in Commonwealth waters in Australia. It is responsible for:

  • offshore oil and gas health and safety, well integrity and environmental management
  • greenhouse gas safety

NOPSEMA is an independent statutory authority established under the Offshore Petroleum and Greenhouse Gas Storage Act 2006. The Act requires reviews of NOPSEMA operations every 5 years.

2020 NOPSEMA review

The 2020 review of NOPSEMA operations is underway See the terms of reference [582KB PDF] [63KB DOCX].

We are managing the process and an independent consultant will conduct the review. We expect to complete the review within 6 months. The final report with be tabled in both houses of parliament.

NOPSEMA transitioned from the National Offshore Petroleum Safety Authority (NOPSA) in 2012.
