The Business Registration Service (BRS) connects with existing Australian Government business registration services to provide a streamlined and improved user experience. It reduces the time and complexity to register a new business, or apply for additional registrations through

The BRS is part of the Government’s $5.5 billion Growing Jobs and Small Business package to help small businesses invest more, grow and employ more Australians.


The BRS enables sole traders, companies, partnerships, trusts and superannuation to apply for:

  • a business name and company name, including checking the availability of a proposed as part of the Australian Securities and Investment Commission registration
  • Australian Business Number, various tax registrations, and AUSkey—Australian Tax Office registrations

People wanting to register a business can use the Help me decide tool to work out:

Business capability

  • We are working with a number of government agencies to integrate with BRS and provide services for small business clients across tiers of government.

  • When using BRS, our returning users and existing businesses can use their digital credentials (AUSkey, Manage ABN Connections/MyGov linked to ABN) to log-in and check the progress of an application or to apply for new tax registrations.

Our services

BRS provides the following levels of service to government agencies. Your agency can access one or more of the options outlined below:

  • Link to BRS. A simple link to BRS from jurisdictional websites guides users through to the one stop shop for Commonwealth registrations.
  • Send BRS registrants to other services. The application summary screen on the BRS service sends recent registrants to ABLIS and IP Australia. Collaborate with us to extend this service to provide a new Business registrant with a simplified service.
  • Consuming APIs. Pull data from BRS to your own jurisdiction-branded website by making use of the ‘share statuses API’. Service NSW have already demonstrated the value of being able to give a holistic service to a client as they work through the process of fulfilling their obligations, with the registrant able to view the status of each of their Commonwealth and State applications within Service NSW.
  • Development of a new API. Collaborate with us to develop APIs and create a solution that best supports your agency’s requirements.
